Definition- Plant pathology is the study of plant diseases, pathogens, and environmental conditions that affect the plant’s overall growth. The study encompasses a wide array of categories such as plant viruses, fungi, bacteria, nematodes, protozoa, viruses, virus-like organisms, parasitic plants, viroid, and oomycetes.
Scope
i) Recording new diseases of economic importance if any, with their identification and extend of incidence.Assessment of losses caused by different diseases of economic importance.
ii) Survey of fields, orchards and areas in order to find out prevalence of diseases and their incidence.
iii) Study of etiology, symptoms, predisposing factors and recurrence of such  diseases.     
iv)  Find out suitable and economic methods of management of economically   Important plant diseases.
v) making of disease resistant variety.
Importance-
 i) Plant protection has gives the  knowledge to protect the crop from diseases.
 ii) It gives certification to only disease free seed production.
iii) known disease is cured by cultural practices.
 iv)many diseases of economic importance can now be checked, minimized or controlled. 
v) making of disease resistant variety by breeder and plant pathologist.
 vi) It restrict the spread diseases from infected to healthy plants   and one country to other by quarantine legislation.
